Aventura: What an Adventure
Known as the "City of Excellence," Aventura, Florida has become one of the most exclusive communities in Southern Florida, and it's easy to see why it has risen to prominence.
Aventura is located in North Miami Beach, approximately 16 miles north of Miami's center. Nearby communities include Pembroke Pines, Hollywood and Golden Glades.
History
Aventura was designed as a planned suburban community in the late 1970's. The city gets its name from the Spanish word for "adventure," thanks to a comment made by a developer working on a new condominium project who remarked, "What an adventure this is going to be!"
Originally, this area was known as "Biscayne Gardens." But obviously, Aventura stuck.
In the early 1980's the community began to take shape as the condominium developments continued and luxury housing became available. The Aventura Mall was built during this time and served to increase interest in the area.
Much of the expansion of Aventura is credited to the success of the mall. The city incorporated in 1995, although the addresses in the area are still Miami addresses, and the town is served by the Miami-Dade County emergency services.
School System
Aventura is served by the Miami-Dade County school system, which offers bus services to this area.
The Aventura City of Excellence charter school was opened in 2003 and quickly rose to national prominence as being one of the best schools in the region. This public charter school serves grades kindergarten through eighth grade. To prevent overcrowding, however, registration is capped at 100 students per grade.
This has led to a lottery system where children are selected for each grade, with preference being given to Aventura residents.
A smaller public school that also serves K-8 students was built at the edge of the city limits and is open to all Aventura residents.
Local Attractions
The Aventura Mall is still one of the area's top attractions, thanks to its 2.4 million square feet of shopping space that is home to some of the world's most prominent stores and boutiques.
With its location on the Intracoastal Waterway, Aventura is ideally situated between two airports and two of the largest ports in Florida. The community center is located within a 2.8-acre park (check out the fountains!) and offers residents a gym, meeting rooms and even a computer lab.
Numerous fine dining restaurants are located within the city, as well as family restaurants and fast food locations. There are also several other malls and shopping centers located within the city limits.
Arts and Culture
Aventura has its own Arts and Cultural Center which offers a Theater Camp in the summers for children, as well as year-round access to theater, ballet performances from some of the world's best companies and a thriving children's theater.
The Arts and Cultural Center is located right on the waterfront in Aventura, and offers excellent parking.
Thanks to its proximity to Miami, residents are just a short drive away from some of the country's best venues for live musical performances, as well as museums and art galleries.
Transportation
The City of Aventura offers free public transportation on its city bus system. In addition, the city is also located on a regular bus route for both Broward County and Miami-Dade County. Interstate 95 is located within five miles of the city center and the city is served by two major thoroughfares; Biscayne Boulevard and the William H. Lehman Causeway.
Climate
Much like the rest of the Miami area, Aventura features a tropical monsoon climate known for its very short and mild winters. The winter time is typically dry, while summers are hot and rainy. In the summer months, the temperatures generally do not go below 75 degrees, and while it can get as hot as the 90's, thunderstorms typically break the heat by mid-day, offering a cooler nighttime.
This climate makes it ideal for gardeners who can enjoy flowers year-round, as well as those who are tired of northern winters and want to spend their time in the sun, on the beach.
Aventura has much to offer its residents. With its ideal location, elegant housing and numerous activities, it truly offers an excellent place to call home.
